Swift for Beginners
From your first program to optionals, collections, closures, structs and classes, protocols, errors, ARC, async/await and a final project.
The course teaches with lessons and quizzes, so you need nothing installed to take it. To run the lesson examples on your own computer, install Swift and an editor: the steps depend on your system.
On a Mac, install Xcode
The lessons use Swift 6, which comes with Xcode 16 or newer.
- Install Xcode from the App Store: Swift and the compiler come with it.
- For quick experiments, Swift Playgrounds also runs Swift code on a Mac or an iPad.
On Windows or Linux, install Swift
The lessons use Swift 6 or newer.
- Open swift.org/install, pick your system and follow its installer.
- Getting started on swift.org shows how to check the installation and run a first program.
On Windows or Linux, install VS Code
Download VS Code and add the Swift extension from the Swift project; its guide walks through the first run.
